Moreton Island and Bribie Island are two of the best 4WD destinations in Southeast Queensland. The beaches are long, the tracks are varied, and on a good day there is nothing quite like it. But getting bogged in soft sand is part of the experience for a lot of Brisbane drivers and how you handle it in the first few minutes determines whether you are back on the track in 20 minutes or calling for affordable tow trucks in Brisbane at sunset with the tide coming in.

We have recovered 4WDs from both islands and from Brisbane's beach driving corridors more times than we can count. Most of those callouts were avoidable. A few were not. This guide covers what the experienced drivers do differently and what to do when the sand wins anyway.

Lower Your Tyre Pressure Before You Hit Sand

This is the single most effective thing you can do before beach driving.

Standard highway tyre pressure sits around 34 to 38 PSI. At that pressure, the tyre footprint on soft sand is narrow. The vehicle sinks rather than floating across the surface, and the harder you try to drive out, the deeper it goes.

Drop the pressure and the footprint widens dramatically. The vehicle starts to float. Traction improves immediately.

For firm, damp beach sand — 20 to 24 PSI works well. Soft or dry sand — drop to 16 to 18 PSI. Extremely soft conditions, like deep dry sand or bulldust tracks — 12 to 15 PSI, but keep your speed low and have a compressor ready to reinflate before you return to the highway.

Never forget to reinflate before leaving the beach. Driving on deflated tyres on a sealed road at highway speed is dangerous and damages the tyre. A portable compressor is not optional gear on a beach trip — it is essential.

Read the Sand Before You Drive It

Not all sand behaves the same way. This is something that only becomes obvious after you have spent time on the islands.

Dark, damp sand near the water's edge is firm and supportive — good driving ground. Dry, pale sand further up the beach is soft and unpredictable, especially in the middle of the day when the sun has been on it for hours. The transition zone between the two changes with the tide, and what was firm sand two hours ago can be soft when you try to drive back through the same spot.

On Moreton Island specifically, the eastern ocean beach is the main driving corridor — but the soft sections between the track and the dune base catch a lot of vehicles. Stay on the established track and avoid the temptation to cut across soft sections to reach a campsite or point of interest.

On Bribie Island, the northern end of Woorim Beach and the track toward White Patch has soft patches that appear after storms or during neap tides when the beach profile changes. If the vehicle in front of you just got through, that does not mean the sand has not shifted since.

Check Tide Times and Plan Around Them

Tide planning is not optional on beach driving trips. It is the difference between a great day and a vehicle recovery situation that could have been avoided entirely.

Low tide exposes firm, wet sand near the waterline — ideal driving conditions. High tide narrows the available beach, pushes vehicles up toward the soft dry sand, and in some sections of both islands, closes the beach completely for a period.

Moreton Island tides follow the Brisbane bar tide chart. Bribie Island's eastern beach tide is slightly different from the western channel side. Check the specific tide chart for the beach you are driving on, not a generic Brisbane tide chart — they are not identical.

The practical rule: aim to be driving your main beach stretches within two hours either side of low tide. If you are camping on the island, plan your arrival and departure around this window rather than assuming you can drive whenever you want to leave.

Rising tides trap more vehicles than almost any other factor. A vehicle parked on the sand while the occupants swim or camp can be surrounded by water faster than expected — particularly at spring tides or after coastal weather events.

Use The Right 4WD Setting

Modern 4WD vehicles have multiple drive modes, and using the correct one before you need it makes a significant difference.

For general beach driving on firm to moderately soft sand, 4 High is appropriate. It gives you good traction without the reduced speed and increased drivetrain heat of 4 Low.

Switch to 4 Low when you are approaching a soft section you are not sure about, when you are attempting a recovery, or when you need to climb loose sand dunes at controlled speed. 4 Low gives you significantly more torque at lower speeds — exactly what you need when traction is marginal and you cannot afford wheel spin.

If your vehicle has a dedicated Sand Mode in the terrain response system, engage it before you reach soft sand rather than in the middle of a difficult section. These systems adjust throttle response, traction control intervention, and transmission shift patterns specifically for soft surfaces and they work considerably better when engaged proactively.


 

Recovery Gear That Actually Makes a Difference

Not all recovery gear is worth carrying. Here is what experienced Brisbane beach drivers actually use.

Recovery tracks (MaxTrax or equivalent) are the most effective self-recovery tool for sand. Place them firmly against the tyre tread, apply gentle throttle, and maintain steady, slow movement. They work. Carry at least two — one for the front, one for the rear.

A quality folding shovel with a wide blade and a reasonable handle length. Clear sand from around all four tyres before any recovery attempt.

A portable air compressor that can reinflate four tyres to highway pressure in a reasonable time. Slow compressors that take 40 minutes per tyre are frustrating and impractical.

A rated recovery strap and soft shackles for vehicle-to-vehicle recovery when another 4WD is available. Never use a snatch strap without understanding how to use it safely. A snatch strap recovery done incorrectly breaks shackles and causes serious injury.

A tyre pressure gauge  a digital one, accurate. You cannot manage tyre pressure for sand driving without knowing what your actual pressure is.

Moreton Island 4WD Recovery: What We See Most Often

Moreton Island 4WD recovery callouts tend to follow predictable patterns.

The stretch from Tangalooma to the northern beach camps is where most boggins happen. Vehicles that have not aired down properly, or that have tried to cross the soft sand above the tide line rather than staying on the firm beach, make up the majority of our callouts here.

The other common situation is tide-related. Vehicles parked on the beach during an extended lunch or swim, with no one monitoring the tide, that end up with water around the wheels before anyone notices the beach has narrowed. By the time the tide is coming in, the soft sand that was manageable at low tide is now very difficult to drive through, and the water adds an urgency that leads to bad decisions.

If you are bogged on Moreton Island with the tide coming in — stop recovery attempts that are not working, get the vehicle as high up the beach as you can manage, and call for professional help. A rushed, unsuccessful recovery attempt at the water's edge in the dark is a far more expensive and dangerous situation than a professional recovery callout.

Bribie Island 4WD Recovery: What Is Different

Bribie Island is more accessible than Moreton but presents its own specific challenges.

The northern end of the eastern beach — above the surf club and toward the point — has consistently soft sand that catches vehicles that were fine on the firmer southern stretch. Drivers who have driven Bribie before and know the beach sometimes come unstuck here because the sand profile changes seasonally and after storm events.

The other Bribie Island 4WD recovery situation we see regularly is inexperienced drivers attempting to drive soft sections in standard hire vehicles or two-wheel drives that should not be on that part of the beach at all. If you are approaching soft sand and you have any doubt about your vehicle's capability — drive around it or turn back. The recovery is not worth the risk of getting a standard vehicle completely buried.

When to Call for Professional 4WD Towing Brisbane

Self-recovery is the right first response in most situations. But there are specific points where calling a professional is the correct decision.

The vehicle is sitting on its chassis with sand over the axles. Self-recovery from this position is very difficult without specialist equipment.

The tide is rising and self-recovery attempts have not worked. Do not keep trying. Get the occupants to safety and call.

A recovery point, tow hook, or chassis component has been damaged. Attempting further recovery with damaged attachment points risks injury.

The vehicle has a mechanical fault — not just a bog. A broken driveshaft, a transmission fault, or an engine problem changes the situation from a sand recovery to a recovery and tow.

You have attempted recovery twice without success. Three failed recovery attempts almost always make the situation worse. Know when to stop and call.
